      Course Overview


      The Urban Search & Rescue (USAR) Medical Team Specialist Course is a 5-day advanced training program designed for emergency response personnel who provide medical care in disaster and austere environments. This course, conducted at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center (MUTC) in Butlerville, Indiana, is a blended learning program combining online coursework with immersive, hands-on training.

      This course focuses on critical trauma management, confined space medicine, environmental injuries, and canine search team medical support. Participants will engage in live rubble and collapse simulations, preparing them for real-world Urban Search & Rescue (USAR) operations.

      Upon successful completion, participants will meet the FEMA equivalency training requirements and the NFPA 1670 and 1006 Standards for Technical Search and Rescue Qualifications.

    • Course Objectives

      By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

      • Perform rapid trauma assessments and provide advanced prehospital interventions in disaster environments.
      • Apply USAR medical protocols for crush syndrome, environmental injuries, and confined space medicine.
      • Provide medical care for search and rescue canines in high-risk operations.
      • Operate effectively within a FEMA USAR Task Force as a Medical Team Specialist.
      • Engage in hands-on rescue simulations involving collapsed structures and hazardous environments.

      Prerequisites

      • Must hold a current certification as an EMT, AEMT, paramedic, nurse, physician assistant, physician, or military medic.
      • Must complete the TEEX/NERRTC CBT module before attending in-person training.
      • Must submit a copy of the CBT completion certificate before the course start date.

      MUTC is a premier disaster response training facility, featuring state-of-the-art collapsed structure simulators, confined space environments, and hazardous materials training zones.

      Participants must bring the following USAR-approved personal protective equipment (PPE):

      • USAR helmet (ANSI Z89.1-type 1) with a helmet light
      • Eye protection (ANSI-rated safety glasses or goggles)
      • Hearing protection (earplugs or earmuffs)
      • Work/safety boots (ANSI-rated with steel or composite toe)
      • Work gloves (cut-resistant or tactical gloves recommended)
      • Knee pads (elbow pads optional)
      • BDU-style long-sleeve work uniform
      • Rain gear and cold-weather clothing (as needed)
      • Flashlight
      • Stethoscope
      • Trauma shears

      • Daily Training Hours: 0800 - 1800
      • Night Training Exercise: June 19, 2025 (ends at 2300)
      • Final Session & Graduation: June 20, 2025 (concludes at 1200)

      Blended Learning Format

      This course consists of:

      • 13-hour Online Computer-Based Training (CBT) Module – Completed through the TEEX/NERRTC platform before attending in-person training.
      • 46 hours of Instructor-Led Training (ILT) over 5 days – Includes hands-on skills, field simulations, and scenario-based exercises.

      Hands-On Training at MUTC

      Participants will train at Muscatatuck Urban Training Center (MUTC), a 1,000-acre advanced facility used for military and civilian emergency response training. The site features:

      • Live rubble piles and collapse structures for realistic disaster response training.
      • Confined space rescue simulators to practice patient extraction techniques.
      • Hazardous environment training areas for extreme condition response drills.

    • The Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) Medical Team Specialist (MTS) Course offered by North American Rescue Training and Education (NAR-T) in partnership with ABC Logistical Resources is an advanced training program designed for Paramedics, Nurses, Physician Assistants, Physicians, and military medical specialists. This course provides the knowledge and hands-on experience required to operate as a Medical Team Specialist in challenging urban and collapsed structure environments, including training in managing crush syndrome, environmental injuries, and veterinary emergencies.

      This course is designed for certified Paramedics, Nurses, Physician Assistants, Physicians, and military medical specialists (such as medics, IDH/HC, 18D, and PJs). To enroll, participants must complete an online CBT module and bring the certificate of completion to the first day of class. Participants must be vetted and registered by November 1, 2024.

      The course includes 13 hours of online learning through a computer-based training (CBT) module and 46 hours of in-person training at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center. The in-person training spans five days and includes practical field exercises, live scenarios in rubble and collapse environments, a nighttime exercise, and instruction on specialized rescue techniques and emergency care for search canines.

      The cost of the Urban Search and Rescue Medical Team Specialist Course is $4,200 per student. This fee includes lodging, meals, and daily transportation within the training center. Participants are responsible for arranging their own travel to the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center. Please note that space is limited, and early registration is recommended.

      Participants must bring specific personal protective equipment (PPE) including a US&R type helmet, eye protection, ear plugs, work/safety toe boots, work gloves, knee pads, and cold weather gear. They should also bring standard work duty clothing, a flashlight, stethoscope, and trauma shears. During the course, participants are required to wear their Task Force or Department uniform.
