This advanced course is designed for Paramedics, Nurses, Physician Assistants, Physicians, and military medical specialists (medic, IDH/HC, 18D, PJ) who are seeking to enhance their skills in providing medical care in austere and challenging environments. The course provides a blend of online and hands-on training, equipping participants with the knowledge and practical experience required to operate effectively as a Medical Team Specialist in Urban Search and Rescue operations.

    • Course Objectives

      By the end of this course, you will be able to:

      1. Understand and manage medical conditions related to crush syndrome, environmental injuries, and confined space rescues.
      2. Apply specialized rescue techniques in urban and collapsed structure environments.
      3. Provide emergency care to search canines and handle veterinary emergencies in the field.
      4. Demonstrate proficiency in practical field exercises, including live rubble and collapse scenarios.

      Course Structure

      This intensive course consists of a combination of online and in-person training:

      • Online Learning (13 hours): Complete a computer-based training (CBT) module through the TEEX/NERRTC website before attending the in-person sessions.
      • In-Person Training (46 hours): Five days of hands-on, instructor-led training at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center, including a nighttime exercise and live practical scenarios in a real rubble and collapse environment.

      • Location: Muscatatuck Urban Training Center, 4230 E Administration Dr, Butlerville, IN 47223.
      • Dates: November 18-22, 2024.
      • Cost: $4,200 per student, including lodging, meals, and daily transportation within the training center.

      Prerequisites

      To enroll, participants must meet the following requirements:

      • Hold certifications as a Paramedic, Nurse, Physician Assistant, Physician, or military medical specialist (medic, IDH/HC, 18D, PJ).
      • Complete the CBT module and bring the certificate of completion on the first day of class.
      • Participants must be vetted and registered by November 1, 2024.

      Accreditation

      This course is FEMA accredited (EQ2021-015) and meets the requirements for Medical Specialists or Medical Team Managers in the national US&R system. It aligns with the NFPA 1670 and 1006 Standards for Technical Search and Rescue Qualifications.


      Class Attire:

      Participants should wear their Task Force or Department uniform throughout the course.


      Equipment Requirements

      Participants must bring the following equipment:

      • Helmet (US&R type, ANSI rated Z89.1-type 1) and helmet light
      • Eye protection (ANSI rated)
      • Ear plugs, work/safety toe boots (ANSI rated)
      • Work gloves, knee pads, rain gear, cold weather gear
      • Standard work duty clothing (long sleeve shirts and BDU top or similar)
      • Flashlight, stethoscope, trauma shears

      Travel Information:

      Participants are responsible for arranging their own travel to the training center. Transportation from Louisville International Airport or Indianapolis International Airport to the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center must be arranged by the participant. NAR will provide daily transportation while at the training center.

      Participants must bring specific personal protective equipment (PPE) including a US&R type helmet, eye protection, ear plugs, work/safety toe boots, work gloves, knee pads, and cold weather gear. They should also bring standard work duty clothing, a flashlight, stethoscope, and trauma shears. During the course, participants are required to wear their Task Force or Department uniform.
